Dare to Discover Course Schedule

Dare to Discover is a two-week program that offers multi-aged classes for academically talented elementary students. All classes provide hands-on activities that inspire creativity, problem solving and critical thinking.

Classes will be taught in English by teachers who have training in gifted education and community artists. Each class is three hours in length and approximately 15 students per class. Classes are subject to cancellation if minimum enrollment is not reached. Children may attend classes at both sites. Transportation is not provided to or from sites. Lunch is supervised for students who attend both morning and afternoon classes. Children must bring their own lunch and drink.

Cost:

Session 1: $70 per class plus any applicable activity fee.
Session 2: $75 for the first class; $70 for each additional class plus any applicable activity fee.

Limited number of partial scholarships are available for qualifying families. No refunds will be made unless notification of cancellation is made no later than 10 days in advance of the first class.

Registration:

Please register by May 25. Complete a registration form from your school's office or download below, or call the Advanced Academic Services Department to register (817) 871-2377. Your child will be placed in a class by phone and you will be given instructions for completing registration and submitting payment.

A Mime is a Terrible Thing to Waste Grades 4-6
Prepare to take a vow of silence as you learn the skills of non-verbal communication. Learn to express your ideas with your body. Try making one side of your face happy and the other side sad-at the same time! Mime will help you gain control of your expressions and motions so you can "say it without words!"

Aloha Nui! Hawaiian Culture Grades 3-6
This class is the next best thing to a trip to Hawaii. Your Hawaiian teacher will share her knowledge and love of the Hawaiian people through food, crafts, dance and language. If you want to be akamai and learn to be treated like ali'i, then you need to take this class and learn a little Hawaiian. Mahalo and aloha. Additional Activity Fee: $5

Art and Advertising Grades 4-6
Have you ever wondered what makes us want to buy certain products? Explore the magical world of art through advertisement and see how artists use advertising to create new and different art. You will create clay sculptures, prints, collages, paper mache sculptures and much more. Additional Activity Fee: $10

Art Safari Grades 2-4
Lions and tigers and bears, oh my! Travel the world with us as we discover how different cultures use animals to express their beliefs and to create really interesting art. The students will create new and exciting projects everyday, while learning about the art of cultures such as those of Australia, Africa, Central America, Native America and more. Additional Activity Fee: $10

Around the World Cinderella Style Grades 4-6
Many countries have their own Cinderella stories. You will read about Rhodopis, a young Egyptian girl who is chosen to be the Pharoah's queen and Naya, an Inuit girl from Alaska who has an exciting adventure. If you enjoy learning about different cultures around the world and you like to read, you will really enjoy this class.

Come Fly With Me! Grades 3-6
As the 100th anniversary of the Wright Brothers' historic flight approaches, learn how they started in this hands-on approach to the art of flying.Experiment with various aerodynamic designs, climb into the pilot's seat at the Vintage Air Museum and visit with experts in the field. Additional Activity Fee: $10

Critters! Grades 1-3
Wiggly worms, interesting isopods and lovely larvae are waiting to meet you! Join us for a hands-on experience with some of the most fascinating (and slightly icky) residents of our area. Additional Activity Fee: $5

Cultural Masks of the World Grades 2-5
After exploring Incan, African and Viking cultures, you will produce cultural masks as you experiment with a variety of materials that you will use to create unique forms, shapes and textures. Just imagine how wonderful they will look on your wall at home! Additional Activity Fee: $10

Explore Chinese Culture Grades 3-6
Come join us to discover China's history and culture. Learn a few simple Chinese words and phrases. Taste some delicious Chinese food that you will learn to make. Become an expert with chopsticks, practice the Chinese art of calligraphy, and learn to do math on the Chinese abacus. You will even learn Chinese games and songs from your Chinese teacher. Additional Activity Fee: $10

Go Fly a Kite Grades 3-5
Do you like to fly kites? Write and tell stories? Paint? Color? Discover? In this class, through the magic of STORYTELLING, you will FLY through the history of kites, WRITE and TELL kite stories, and CREATE your very own kite to fly! Additional Activity Fee: $10

Hodge-Podge Collage Grades 4-6
Art will make you smart. Exercise self-expression practiced through various collage techniques. Your hands will stay busy while your creative brain explores a variety of mixed media art techniques. You will be amazed at your artistic ability when you create something wonderful from everyday objects. Additional Activity Fee: $10

Making Music Grades 1-3
If you enjoy singing and moving to the music, then this class is for you. You will learn to play a variety of Orff instruments and become part of the cast in the musical your class will perform.

Moving to the Music Grades 4-6
Express yourself in song and dance. Learn to play Orff instruments and study sound by constructing your own musical instrument. Plan to have a good time while you polish your choreography and voice skills.

Much Ado! Shakespeare for Kids Grades 3-6
Did you ever wonder where the expressions-dead as a doornail and a tower of strength-came from? They can be found in Shakespeare's plays. You are invited to step back to Elizabethan times and into the powerfully imaginative world of Shakespeare's plays. Hands-on activities will bring the art, stagecraft and Elizabethan times to life. Be ready to take the stage.

Ohh! Ahh! I Can Paint! Grades 1-2
We will study famous painters-who are they? What did they paint? How did they paint? What secrets and stories are in their paintings? Then we will create our own masterpieces using paint, chalk, paper, and drama and display them in our class museum for others to Ohh! and Ahh!
Additional Activity Fee: $5

Puppeteering Grades 1-3
Learn the art of making puppets. Work in small groups to select a fairy tale, design and make the cast of characters, write a script and perform your puppet play before an audience. Additional Activity Fee: $5

Rainforest Exploration Grades 1-3
What is so special about rainforests? Join us as we explore the plants and animals of the rainforest. Create a rain stick to keep at home for rainy days. Design your own rainforest in a bottle. Go get your safari hat ready for this jungle journey.

Sí, Yo Hablo Español Grades 1-3
Would you like to learn to speak Spanish? You will have fun singing and eating and painting while you learn basic Spanish words and phrases. Amaze your parents and friends with your knowledge about the language and culture of Mexico. Additional Activity Fee: $5

Sign It! Grades 3-6
Come and learn American sign language. When you know sign language, you can talk with your mouth full!

The Science in CSI! (Crime Scene Investigations) Grades 4-6
See how physical science, life science, earth science, archaeology, anthropology and critical thinking are used to solve crimes. Get ready for hands-on Forensic Fun!

The Wild West Grades 4-6
History will come to life as you celebrate Western heritage in a class taught at the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame. Learn about roping, ranching, the rodeo and much more. Create your own Kids Wild West Show! Many hands-on activities and daily visits to the museum's displays will enhance your study of the West. So saddle up, Partner, for a trip down the Western history trail. Additional Activity Fee: $10

Underwater Adventure Grades 1-3
There is definitely something fishy about this class! Get ready to explore the four zones of the ocean and the creatures that live there. You will create your own aquarium, learn songs about the ocean, and show your artistic skills as you learn more about life under the sea. Get on board for this adventure. Additional Activity Fee: $10

Unusual Animals Grades 1-3
What characteristics make animals special? How do animals contribute to our world? You will create a new animal out of paper mache using the favorite parts of real animals, give it a name, and develop a personal story about it. Your new friend will definitely be one of a kind! Additional Activity Fee: $10
