FWISD – Prekindergarten
In Texas, public prekindergarten is a compensatory program. That is, the program is offered only to those children “at-risk” of not being successful in kindergarten, rather than an universal program open to all four-year-olds. Because of this, to enroll in the pre-k program, children and their parents must meet the following criteria:
- Child must be four years old on or before September 1
- Each pre-k campus must serve its’ own attendance areas first, proof of residence such as a current lease agreement or current utility bill is required in the parent or guardians’ name
- If child is living with a guardian and/or has been removed from the home by CPS or other agency, we must have documentation of this
- The child/family must meet ONE of the following eligibility criteria:
- The family meets the National School Lunch & Child Nutrition Programs Income Eligibility Guidelines (verification of income such as 1040 Form or W-2 Form from the previous year is required). OR
- The child speaks and comprehends English as a second language (this is determined by Student Placement Center administering a language placement test to the child). OR
- The family meets the criteria of “homeless”
When the family goes to enroll the child at a campus, the following will be required:
- Copy of birth certificate
- Copy of immunization record
- Proof of residence within FWISD, such as a current utility bill or rental statement (must be in the name of the parent/guardian enrolling the student)
A driver’s license or identification card is not acceptable for proof of residence.
- Proof of income (if enrolling by that eligibility – such as 1040 Form or W-2 Form from the previous year
All classes for four-year-olds are organized on a first-come, first-served basis. Parents/guardians must provide transportation.
