The Student Placement Center is a special office provided by the Fort Worth ISD to help students who have a home language other than English enroll in school.
The office is a part of the Bilingual/ESL Department and provides many valuable services for new students and their families. These include:
- Services for students
- registration
- assessment
- lunch application
- bus information
- school assignment information
- immunization information
- graduation plan information
- counseling services
- review/translation of transcripts
- Services for parents
- information about the Fort Worth ISD
- assistance in filling out forms such as free and reduced lunch applications, if needed
- referrals to the Migrant Coordinator, if needed
Do all students who speak languages other than English need to go to the Center to be assessed?
Yes, students with a language other than English who have never been enrolled in a FWISD school need to go to the Center.
What records pertaining to their child should parents take with them to the Student Placement Center?
- Verification of address (water or phone bill, etc.)
- Immunization records
- Birth certificate or affidavit showing proof of age
- Report cards or any type of school record from previous school (if available)
- Social Security card (if available)
Should parents call the Center prior to going?
During July and August, parents should call, if at all possible, to be sure Center staff can register and assess the students on the day or at the time desired. This is a very busy time of year, and calling ahead could prevent having to wait or to return on another day. During other months, parents may call at their own discretion to make specific arrangements.
Is there a fee for the services provided by the Center?
No, the Fort Worth ISD offers these services at no cost to parents.
What are the hours of operation?
The Student Placement Center office is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday during the school year, excluding school holidays. During August the SPC will also be open (2 Saturdays) August 7th and 14th, for families not able to come in on a weekday. Starting July 29th to the beginning of the school year, the office opens on weekdays at 8:30, with closing times varying, depending upon numbers of students to be registered and assessed.
Opening Date for 2004 is July 29th.

8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.Is there a "best" time during the day to go to the Center?
During the busy periods in July and August, it is best for parents of middle and high school students to go to the Center as early in the morning as possible.
Parents whose children are of primary school age may wait until later in the morning, as assessment does not take as long as it does with older students.
During the busy times, parents are urged not to go to the Center after 12:00 without calling, as it may not be possible to complete all procedures because of the number of students being assessed.
Where is the Student Placement Center located?
The office is located at 999 N. University Drive. This is on the north side of the downtown area.
What can parents expect when they take their child(ren) to the Center?
Parents can expect to:
- be greeted by trained staff persons who speak English and
- Spanish
- Vietnamese
- Lao
- French
- Serbo-Croatian (Bosnian)
- be assisted in completing enrollment papers
- have their son/daughter assessed in English and Spanish, Vietnamese, or Bosnian, if appropriate
- be provided information about appropriate programs and asked to help make the decision about placement
- be given information about how to apply for free and reduced lunch and about immunization procedures, if needed
- be put in contact with the Coordinator for the Migrant Program, if appropriate (817)740-5520
- leave the Center with a packet of information and with enrollment fully or partially completed, depending upon records parents bring with them
How much time does it take to complete the registration process at the Student Placement Center?
The time will vary from 45 minutes to two hours, depending on the age of the student and the type of assessment needed to ensure the best possible program for the student.
What follow-up services does the Center provide?
Student Placement Center staff members take a personal interest in all of the students they register. Staff members are available to:
- receive calls from parents and students after the students enroll in school
- make follow-up visits to schools
- make home visits
- counsel with students
- assist with transportation issues
