FWISD Trustee Elaine Klos receives United Way awardElaine F. Klos, Fort Worth Independent School District school board representative for District 7, became the recipient of the United Way's prestigious award for Herculean achievements by a professional in the field of human services at a May 18 banquet at the Renaissance Worthington in Fort Worth. Klos serves as director of advocacy and public policy for Volunteers of America-Texas where she has been a local, state and national advocate for such issues as the quality of early care and education of children, the Children's Health Insurance Program, child abuse and neglect, welfare reform, workforce development, the mental health system, adolescent pregnancy and other issues. Through her professional and volunteer involvement, she has served in such positions as master trustee for the Texas Association of School Boards; vice chair of the Tarrant County Workforce Development Board, chair of the Tarrant County Youth Collaboration, and member of Texans Care For Children. She also has been appointed to the Administration for Child and Families Regional Early Childhood Council and is a former member of the Tarrant County Child Protective Services Board. In an innovative project, Klos' leadership of the FWISD's child care task force has resulted in a new FWISD collaboration with community child care providers to enhance pre-literacy and pre-enumeration development of children. Since November 1999, the FWISD's Early Literacy Program has provided services to 126 licensed and 12 home child care providers. Parent educators have modeled lessons, assisted with lesson plan development and loaned materials to child care providers during more than 870 personal, monthly visits, impacting more than 2,300 future FWISD students. As organizer and leader of the Tarrant County Legislative Impact Team, she works with elected officials, staff members, governmental agency leaders and issue-oriented groups to develop and coordinate legislation in welfare reform and children's issues. In addition to leading a coalition of agencies concerned with child abuse and neglect, Klos also is currently spearheading a major collaborative effort between the school district and numerous community agencies concerning adolescent pregnancy prevention in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. A native of Philadelphia, Pa., Klos holds a bachelor's degree in psychology from Texas Wesleyan University. |
