What is Reading Recovery?

Reading Recovery is an early intervention program designed to assist the lowest achieving students in first grade who are having difficulty learning to read and write. Children meet individually with a specially trained teacher for 30 minutes each day for an average of 12-20 weeks.

Reading Recovery Implementation means

A shift in focus from providing remedial services to providing children with one-on-one instruction at the acquisition stage of learning to read. We want to accelerate their learning before they have a chance to fail.

Key Features:

Short Term Intervention
A Reading Recovery program is provided for a child for approximately 12 to 20 weeks.

Early Identification

Children are screened beginning the second week of school using An Observation Survey, Clay, 1991. The lowest performing children are selected first. At age 6-7 the gap is small between the low and average progress children and can be closed with accelerated learning. Wrong learning patterns have not become habituated.
