Philosophy of Music Education
- Music study is intrinsically worthwhile and a thing of profound beauty - a field with it own unique body of knowledge and skills. It is the mark of our civilization, and therefore to be cultivated.
- A good education helps convert "brains to minds," and the systematic study of music is a vital part of that process. It teaches mental discipline, attentiveness, reflection, creative problem solving, and curiosity-qualities that animate us as individuals and that we look for in a cultivated mind.
- Music study promotes cultural awareness, which is essential if individuals are to become strong contributors to their society. The greater our investment in young minds and the more access we provide to our culture, the more likely society will be repaid in the form of individual accomplishment.
- Music study is not just for the gifted or privileged. Its availability is a matter of individual intellectual freedom and development, both of which are essential to an active democracy and a vital musical culture. Music study enables us to make personal distinctions; to describe, interpret, and evaluate independently; and to make informed decisions about the music we like. This "independence of mind" is something we value as Americans, cultivate in other fields, and should treasure in music study.
- Music study provides unique opportunities for self-expression and creativity, thus encouraging a sense of grounding in an essential human experience. In a highly technological, materialistic society, we need the special pleasures that music can provide to help us establish the quality of our survival in a world preoccupied with quantity.
Strategic Plan
The goals of the FWISD Music Programs are to provide opportunities for each student to develop his/her musical talents, to provide opportunities for students to perform in quality ensembles, and to provide opportunities for students to witness live professional fine arts performances.
Strategic plan for accomplishing these goals includes:
- Setting high performance standards for individual and ensemble performance for all FWISD Music Programs,
- Developing a comprehensive district-wide band, orchestra, choral, and elementary music curriculum,
- Establishing a comprehensive staff development program to enhance the quality of instruction for all students in the Music Program,
- Promoting a district-wide private lesson program for all students,
- Hiring the finest music directors to conduct the FWISD All-City Honor Choirs, All-District Bands and Orchestras,
- Working collaboratively with campus principals and the Human Resources Department to attract, recruit, and retain certified, quality music teachers,
- Working collaboratively with the finance department, district administration, and school board to improve local funding for all Music Programs,
- Working collaboratively with the Parental Music Advocacy Group to address issues pertinent to the Music Programs,
- Working collaboratively with the Bass Performance Hall Educational Division to enhance opportunities for students to attend professional fine arts performances, and,
- Establishing a stronger network with professional and semi-professional performing groups and musicians in the Metroplex to facilitate attendance to a variety of major performances.
