FWISD meets Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) standards

The Fort Worth Independent School District received a rating of "Meets AYP Standard," according to the Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) report released by the Texas Education Agency earlier today.

Adequate Yearly Progress is one of the new requirements of the federal No Child Left Behind Act.

Only three ratings are possible: "Meets AYP Standard," "Needs Improvement," and "Not Rated," based on such criteria as academic performance, participation rates in reading/language arts, mathematics, the graduation rate (for high schools and district) and the attendance rate (for elementary and middle schools).

  • According to the report, NO school in the FWISD received a "needs improvement" rating because of academics.
  • 28 secondary schools and seven elementary schools received "needs improvement" because of participation rates. One high school received "needs improvement" due to graduate rate and participation.

The evaluation not only considers all students at each school and district, but also the progress made by each student group. In addition to groups included in Texas' own accountability system (African American, Hispanic, White, economically disadvantaged), the AYP includes student performance by special education and limited-English proficient students.

The district is in the process of further disaggregating and studying the data.
