Facilities advisory group visits campuses

The Facilities Advisory Group toured district campuses and facilities on Wednesday, May 19. The tour gave them a better understanding of district building projects and possible future needs.

TEAM Fort Worth to sponsor Shadow Day

A Shadow Day is being planned for elementary and middle school students who participate in TEAM Fort Worth. Mentors have expressed interest in taking their TEAMmate into the workplace, and this activity, scheduled for the end of June, will allow students to spend half a day with their mentor during the summer. TEAM Fort Worth is a school-based mentoring program funded by a grant from the Department of Education.

Technology gets boost from E-rate Funds

Fort Worth was recently awarded $8.4 million in E-rate funds for internal connections. These funds will be used at 71 eligible schools based on their students' free and reduced lunch status. The 71 schools will get upgraded network infrastructure in the form of new network electronics, voice and data wiring and fiber optic cabling, and connection of their portable buildings to the campus network. The grant will also fund file servers for improved network, file, and print services, and user accounts enabling students access to network resources from any connected computer on campus.

Schools participate in World of Wings program

As part of the World of Wings program, 47 Fort Worth ISD schools decorated 6x6-foot cardboard airplanes. A total of 300 airplanes are on display at DFW International Airport's terminals, rental car facility, remote parking areas and other locations across DFW during the year prior to the opening of DFW's new international Terminal D. This will be the permanent home for the airplanes. Each plane will have an accompanying sign that tells what school decorated the airplane and a photograph of its artists. Completed planes will also be on the DFW Airport Web site (www.dfwairport.com).

Registration for HS summer school June 4

Registration for regular high school summer school will be held June 4, 7 a.m. - 7 p.m., at Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center. The regular summer school will be offered from 7:30 a.m. ­ 12:40 p.m. June 8 - July 22 at Trimble Tech HS. Transportation will be provided from home school sites to Trimble Tech HS.

Students honored for attendance improvements

Alberto Segura Jr., Diamond Hill-Jarvis HS, and Linh Dahn, Paschal HS, were the first recipients of the Walter D. Dansby Achievement Award for improved attendance through the Comprehensive Truancy Intervention Program. The award was sponsored by Score a Goal in the Classroom and NBC 5.

Grant funds wildscape at Paschal HS

Paschal High School and the City of Fort Worth Environmental Management Department, Paschal's Adopt-A-School partner, received a grant for $8,600 from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to develop a wildscape at the school. Over 660 ninth-graders each year will work with the area in hands-on outdoor education while learning practical earth science. Overall more than $20,000 from 10 community partners has been raised to complement the existing program.

Schools provide TAAS/TAKS Summer Tutorial

The TAAS/TAKS summer tutorial is available for students who have failed parts of either exit-level exam during the 2003-2004 school year and for out-of-school students who must pass the exit test to receive a diploma. Registration for the TAAS/TAKS summer tutorial will be held June 4, 7 a.m. - 7 p.m., at Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center. Tutorials run from June 8 - 30, 7:30 a.m. ­ 12:40 p.m. TAAS classes will be held at Trimble Tech HS and TAKS classes at either Carter-Riverside HS or South Hills HS, the cost is free, and transportation is provided from home school sites to the high schools.

June 1 Teacher job fair at Southwest HS

The Human Resources Department will host its annual teacher job fair on Tuesday, June 1, 2004. The job fair, which will be held at Southwest High School, is expected to attract several hundred applicants. To receive an invitation to the job fair, applicants must hold appropriate teacher certification or be enrolled in the district's TMATE program. Applicants must also complete the district's online application, provide appropriate certification and education credentials, and submit acceptable references.

Teachers Recognized on National Teacher Day

Tarrant County Courage to Teach (TCCTT) honored 99 Fort Worth ISD educators as part of the observance of National Teacher Day on May 4. Students, parents, friends and colleagues honored these teachers and other campus leaders for their impact in the lives of students and for their deep commitment to education. Teachers were nominated by individual submission and sent cards, personal messages and thank you's for their dedication.

Arlington Heights High School won the Best Musical Award during the Fourth Annual Betty Lynn Buckley Awards, for their production of Pippin, deemed the most outstanding of the 19 musicals considered? Individual winners were Katherine Broyles of Arlington Heights HS for Best Actress in a Supporting Role and Jacob Moriarity-Stone of Paschal HS for Best Director. Winners in each category received a $500 scholarship!
