Lt. Gov. visits Montessori classrooms

Como Montessori School hosted a visit from Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst Jan. 29, one of several schools he is visiting across the state. Dewhurst said it was his first opportunity to observe how Montessori schools differ from other public schools. He was joined by State Sen. Jane Nelson, a former member of the State Board of Education. The pair also met with several teachers and staff for input on school finance and other topics.

Student Placement Center processes additional international students

Enrollment of recent immigrants continues to grow. In January, the Student Placement Center enrolled 320 new students. About 2,580 newly arrived immigrant students have been processed since the 2003-04 school year began.

Applications for teachers, voluntary transfers now on-line

Applications for teachers, substitute teachers and voluntary transfers are now available on FWISD's Web site, www.fortworthisd.org.

Students, parents urged to consider advanced academics

Freshman round-ups are currently underway for parents and students to learn the benefits of advanced academic classes available in FWISD high schools. For those interested, special interest programs (SIP) hosted daytime and evening open house programs. The Jan. 24 SIP Fair at Tarrant County College drew 1,500 parents and students.

DAC deadline extended

The application deadline for candidates for the District Advisory Committee has been extended until 4 p.m. Feb. 16. Nominations are sought for a middle school parent; a parent of a student in choice, Advanced Academics or school-in-school programs, a parent of an FWISD student, and a community representative who must live within the FWISD. Applications may be returned to the School and Community Relations Office, 100 N. University Dr. Ste. 260, Fort Worth, TX 76107.

Rosemont MS students to make school/career connection

Nearly 160 Rosemont MS seventh-graders are participating in motivational Vital Link internships
Feb. 9-13. The most unique placements include Susquehanna Radio Corporation and HKS Architects, Inc. in Dallas. Among hosts are Wells Fargo Bank, Coca-Cola Bottling Company, Southside Veterinary Clinic and Tarrant County College, as well as regular participating partners Eckerds, Fiesta Mart, Off-Price Shoes, Target, Albertson's, and Mervyn's.

FWISD journalism students to attend workshop

FWISD journalism students will hone writing and other skills during a Feb. 14 workshop at Texas Christian University sponsored by the local Society of Professional Journalists. A panel of professionals will discuss career options, and students will submit work for awards. Among participants are Pat Svacina of U.S. Rep. Kay Granger's office, Fort Worth Star-Telegram writers John Gutierrez-Mier and Bud Kennedy and NBC-5 reporter Scott Gordon.

March 5 dedication planned at Dolores Huerta ES

A dedication program for the new Dolores Huerta ES, 3309 Long Ave., will take place at 4 p.m. March 5. A visit by the school's namesake, who was a colleague of civil rights activist Cesar Chavez, is tentatively planned.

Students enjoy Groundhog Job Shadowing Day

Ten students each from Riverside MS and North Side HS learned about career development in the hotel industry during National Groundhog Job Shadowing Day at the Renaissance Worthington Hotel on Feb. 2. The purpose of this annual event is to engage students in the world of work. Riverside MS is the hotel's Adopt-A-School partner; the North Side students are interns at the hotel through their hospitality course. America's Promise, Junior Achievement and the U.S. Department of Labor sponsored the event.

Dunbar Community School to accept Registration

Registration for the Spring I session of the Dunbar Area Community School takes place from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 23 in the Dunbar HS cafeteria. Late registration is available from 5 to 8 p.m. Feb. 24 - March 4 in the community school office. Classes include computer technology, auto mechanics, Spanish, GED, nurses assistant and more. Details on classes and child care eligibility are available at 817/496-7688. The enrollment for fall semester classes reached 593.

Research, IS moves likely in March

Construction on offices for the 35-member Research and Evaluation and the Information Services departments are in the final stages with a tentative move-in date of mid-March. The research department's office, data and technical staff will make the transition first, followed by evaluation and testing staff.

Schools set Pre-K registration dates

Preregistration for prekindergarten for the 2004-05 school year begins in late March and is being scheduled by individual schools. Information is also available from the Early Childhood Department at ext. 3098 or ext. 1149.

Si Se Puede set for April 3

This spring's Si Se Puede Stay in School initiative has been scheduled for April 3 at Rosemont MS. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. with the program taking place from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Did you know ...

... food service employees from 20 schools and the administration building were honored as Heroes by Score a Goal in the Classroom at the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo?

... six student musicians received All-State recognition from the Texas Music Educators Association and will perform in San Antonio with the Texas All-State Band and Orchestra on Feb. 11 - 15? Honored were, in the band division, Chris Hall, baritone saxophone, and Andrew Fowler, trumpet, both of Southwest HS, and Aaron Fortier, French horn player from Carter-Riverside HS. In the orchestra division were Meredith Clark, harp, and Kevin Chen, violin, both of Paschal HS, and Urim Choi, violin, Western Hills HS.
