Advancement Via Individual Determination

Twenty-eight secondary campuses are AVID sites. The mission of AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, is to ensure that all students, and most especially the least served students who are in the middle will: succeed in rigorous curriculum, complete a rigorous college preparatory path, enter mainstream activities of the school, and become educated and responsible participants and leaders in a democratic society. AVID elective teachers support these students in socializing intelligence as they focus on academic rigor using WICR (writing, inquiry, collaboration, and reading,) study skills, learning goal setting, organization, and time-management.  Students succeed in Pre-AP and AP courses and apply for and enroll in 4-year colleges.

 AVID Student Recruitment

AVID student selection focuses on students in the middle with the desire and determination to prepare for success in a 4-year college or university. Students are to meet one or more of the following criteria: first in family to attend college, historically underserved in 4-year colleges, low income or special circumstances. AVID program participants, both students and staff, choose to participate.
