Early Childhood: Pre-K

Prekindergarten

In Texas, public prekindergarten is a compensatory program. Meaning, the program is offered only to children "at-risk" of not being successful in kindergarten, rather than a universal program open to all four-year-olds.

Qualification:

To enroll in the pre-k program, children and their parents must meet the following criteria:

  1. Child must be four years old on or before September 1
  2. Each pre-k campus must serve its' own attendance areas first, proof or residence such as a current lease.
  3. If child is living with a guardian and/or has been removed from the home by CPS or other agency, we must have documentation of this
  4. The children/family must meet ONE of the following eligibility criteria:
  • The family meets the National School Lunch & Child Nutrition Program Income Eligibility Guidelines (verification of income such as 1040 Form or W-2 Form from the previous year is required). OR
  • The child speaks a language other than English and is considered as Limited English Proficient through a state approved test administered by the Student Placement Center. OR
  • The family meets the criteria of "homeless"

Enrollment Requirements:

When the family goes to enroll the child at a campus, the following will be required:

  1. Copy of birth certificate
  2. Copy of immunization record
  3. Proof of residence within FWISD, such as a current utility bill or rental statement ( must be in the name of the parent/guardian enrolling the student) NOTE: A driver's license or identification card is not acceptable for proof of residence.
  4. Proof of income(if enrolling by that eligibility - such as 1040 Form or W-2 Form form the previous year)

All classes for four-year-olds are organized on a first-come basis. Parents/guardians must provide transportation.
