FWISD Seeking Start of School Waiver

The Fort Worth Independent School District is seeking a waiver from the Texas Education Agency (TEA) in order to start school on August 14, 2006.

A public hearing was held January 12, 2006 to gather community response to the waiver intent.

The proposed calendar would include a weeklong Thanksgiving break. The district's winter break would begin on December 21 through January 3, spring break would begin on March 12 ending March 16, and May 25 would be the last day of school.

Section 25.0811 of the Texas Education Code mandates that school districts may only begin instruction for the school year during or after the week in which August 21 falls. The statue allows districts to apply to the TEA for a waiver of the first day of instruction if a hearing is provided along with public notification of the district's intent.
