World Languages
The Mission of the World Language Department of the Fort Worth ISD is to provide all students with the opportunity to acquire proficiency in at least one language other than English, and encourage a greater understanding of other cultures, as well as their own.
The World Languages Department of the Fort Worth Independent School District envisions a high performing articulated K-12 program in which all students achieve both linguistic and cultural proficiency in a language other than English.
Fort Worth ISD offers instruction in nine languages: American Sign Language; Chinese; French; German; Italian; Japanese; Latin; Russian; and Spanish. Advanced Placement courses are offered in French, German, Italian, Latin, and Spanish, with Advanced Placement Spanish Language offered in seven middle schools across the district.
Students may begin language study in Grade 6 with Exploratory Languages, then focus on a specific language in Grade 7. Middle School students who take the same language in Grades 7 and 8 receive one year of high school language credit. Fort Worth ISD offers courses from Levels I through Advanced Placement Levels IV and V in French, German, Italian, Latin, and Spanish. 4 levels of American Sign Language, and 3 levels of Chinese and Japanese are also offered. Spanish courses for heritage speakers of Spanish are available in both middle and high schools, providing opportunities for these students to develop further in their first language.
