Burton Hill Elementary Selected for REAL School Gardens
After a competitive application process, Burton Hill Elementary School is proud to announce the school's selection as a new partner of REAL School Gardens

REAL School Gardens plans to install a learning garden on campus by the spring of 2013.  Funding is contingent upon the support of a foundation or corporate partner.

Over the course of three years, REAL School Gardens and Burton Hill Elementary will work together to build the garden, train teachers and set up the learning garden for long-term success.  Parents and members of the community will be invited to help design the garden.

The garden will serve as an outdoor classroom, designed to provide hands-on, experiential learning opportunities for students. This real-world learning can be integrated into all academic subject areas and has been shown to benefit children by boosting academic achievement, nurturing healthy lifestyles, cultivating life skills and promoting environmental stewardship.

Nearly 40 other Fort Worth ISD elementary schools currently partner with REAL School Gardens.  Click here to learn more.

Teachers Organize Soccer Tournament for INA Students

Two first year teachers, Evan Mirolla from INA and Aaron Aguirre-Castillo from O.D. Wyatt, organized a soccer tournament for their students Saturday, May 12. It was played on the fields at O.D. Wyatt.

This is the second tournament that the two Teach for America teachers have organized and hosted this year. Many of the students who attend INA live within walking distance of Wyatt, and a number of the students who transition out of INA transfer into Wyatt. So, it’s a way to bring students together and continue to build a support network of peers; not to mention it’s a day of sport and fun!

Western Hills HS Swim Team: 2012 District 8-4A Champions
swimThe Western Hills Swim Teams made another splash this season. The girls won their 10th consecutive district title by holding off Birdville and the boys dominated their side and won their 7th consecutive district title. There were many accomplishments this year in the pool and in the classroom.
Kent Grimes set a new school record in the 100 Backstroke breaking Alan Lake’s time of 57.65 in 1987 with a new record of 54.88. Kent, along with Maximillian Honarmand, Marcus McQueen, and Josiah Meharg broke the school record in the 400 Free Relay, which was also set back in 1987. The old time was a 3:36.50 and the new record is 3:34.12. Kent was selected to the All-State swim team in the 100 Backstroke. He was 18th in the state. In the classroom, the boys received the NISCA Scholar Team Silver Award with a GPA of 3.521, this is a national award. Justin Barnett received All-State Academic Team.
Kent will continue to swim in the future as he has committed to swim at McMurray University in the fall on a swim scholarship.
Deanna VonBehrens, Sara Blackwell, Sydney Taylor, and Laney Honeycutt set a new record in the 200 Medley Relay at the district meet this year. The old time of 2:12.80 set back in 2007 was bested by the 2012 squad with a time of 2:11.09. In the classroom, the girls received the NISCA Scholar Gold Level Award with a GPA of 3.66. This ranks them in the top 10 GPAs in the nation of swim teams that participated in the award. Sara Blackwell received All-American Academic honors with her GPA. Sydney Taylor and Mariel Honarmand received All-State Academic Team honors, as well.
This has been a very successful year and we look forward to more in the future.
