Harlean Beal ES dedication setA dedication program for the new Harlean Beal Elementary School will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, April 17, at the school. Joining board members, the superintendent and principal on the program will be former principal and school namesake, Harlean Beal. Renovation begins for grant-funded SIP CentersRenovation began March 1 at five middle schools participating in a federal grant that will provide electives to support and enrich their special interest themes. The schools are Dunbar 6th, Dunbar MS, J.P. Elder, William James, and Morningside. The grant will support learning centers that allow the special interest program at each school to expand schoolwide. Changes at the schools will reflect each center's special interest focus, such as information technology, bio-sciences, engineering, and international commerce and world cultures. High schools schedule AP review sessionsSeveral high schools are scheduling review sessions in selected subjects for Advanced Placement students each Saturday in April in preparation for upcoming AP exams in May. Schools hosting the reviews are extending an invitation for students across the district to attend. For details, call the Advanced Academic Services office, ext. 2514. AP exam registration growsStudents have registered for a significantly higher number of Advanced Placement exams this year. In 2002, students signed up for 2,675 exams; this year they signed up for 3,332 - some 657 more. The increase may be attributed to such factors as students being better prepared through vertical articulation, to AVID students moving into more AP classes, and to encouragement by academic coordinators who make students aware that major universities look for students who test, not just those who take AP courses.
