BOARD BRIEFS - January 14, 2003 Jan. 24 deadline for higher education opportunitiesFWISD educators have until January 24 to submit portfolios for consideration as candidates in one of several college collaboration programs in educational administration. Details have been disseminated and are available on the district's First Class e-mail system. Programs include Educational Leadership UTA, the Collaboration of Educational Organizations (CEO) through the Education Service Center Region XI and Tarleton State University, and the Alliance for Educational Leadership certification program for those who already have a master's degree. 5 Community Forums scheduled for spring semesterCommunity Forums, which will invite public input on constructive budget cuts, are slated for January 23, Carter-Riverside HS, 3301 Yucca; February 27, Stripling MS, 2100 Clover Lane; March 27, Daggett MS, 1108 Carlock; April 16, Lowery Road ES, 7600 Lowery Rd.; and May 15, Dunbar HS, 5700 Ramey. Start time is 7:30 p.m. Administration Building to be dedicatedA program to dedicate the FWISD Administration Building in honor of Gary J. and Lynne L. Manny takes place at 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 22. A reception will follow the program. FWISD initiates meeting with larger Texas districtsDetails are being completed for a meeting of representatives from approximately 20 of Texas' largest school districts who will meet with FWISD January 24. The group will discuss curriculum and instruction issues related to the accountability system, particularly as it affects districts with high numbers of minority and economically disadvantaged students. The exchange of ideas is expected to lead to an on-going dialogue about effective strategies and programs across the state. District notified of Head Start grantFWISD is one of 21 Head Start providers in Texas awarded a Head Start grant by the Texas Education Agency (TEA). The district's $400,000 award will be used to provide scientific, research-based, prereading instruction to four-year-olds so they will be ready to learn to read in kindergarten and first grade. Texas Wesleyan University will collaborate with the FWISD through the university's early childhood teacher training programs. Additional funds awarded for readingFWISD will receive additional funds from TEA to help students meet requirements of the Student Success Initiative. The initiative will require third-graders to pass the reading section of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) before being promoted to fourth grade. The funds are in addition to earlier funding provided to support Accelerated Reading Instruction. The amount of funding is based on the number of students projected to need remediation for promotion to fourth grade. E-mail address set up for budget cut ideasLocal residents and employees are invited to share their constructive ideas for reducing the budget without significantly impacting instruction. Early February deadline set for DAC applicationsApplications are available in the Administration Building, Ste. 260, for several openings on the District Advisory Committee: Place 13 - Elementary Parent and Place 15 - High School Parent, and for Place 19 - Community Representative. All must reside in the district and may not be an FWISD employee. The community representative may not be a parent of an FWISD student. Applications are due February 3 in the School and Community Relations Office, 100 N. University Drive, Ste. 260. Introduction to Texas Scholars program scheduledCommunity representatives will visit more than 200 ninth-grade world geography classes the weeks of January 27 and February 3 to encourage participation in the Texas Scholars program. The program motivates students to earn the 24-credit Recommended High School Diploma that better prepares them for the future and leads to eligibility for Texas Grants, need-based scholarships. Students participate in Safe City Poster ContestSecondary school art teachers are coordinating a Safe City Poster Contest sponsored by Safe City Fort Worth, a non-profit group that encourages students to create a more non-violent community. Cash prizes will go to each school's first, second and third place winners. Districtwide grand prize winners, middle and high school, will receive a family trip for four to Disney World and $250 cash. One middle and one high school art teacher will receive a prize valued at $250 for highest participation in the contest. An awards program is scheduled at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, at the City Club. Adult Evening High School helps HS students catch up on creditsHigh school students who received approval from principals and counselors have enrolled in an Adult Evening High School session at the Adult Education Center on Circle Drive. The session concludes March 6. Students may transfer credits toward their diploma at the home high school. Cost for FWISD students is $115 for one class or $215 for two. Cable has alerted the district that its FWISD ITV Channel will
be aired on Charter's Channel 30, beginning that date. Did you know ......
